The jury’s comments: “An aesthetically enjoyable sports hall with complex engineering, offering multiple areas of exploitation and distinguishing from other Nordic ice halls by greater consideration for design.”

Aadu Kana, Chairman of the jury: “We were delighted about the diverse use of concrete and the very high quality of the concrete works. The union of concrete and wood is especially well executed in this building.”

Special prize for architecture – Architectural bureau Studio-3 OÜ,

The building of the Embassy of the Republic of Estonia, Beijing, China.

For the high level of work architecturally and excellent exhibition of concrete in the exterior as well as interior.

The jury’s comments: “The architects of the building envisaged even more striking and imposing use of concrete, but the local builders did not fully execute their wishes. The building itself is of monolithic concrete and the external walls were supposed to be made of white monolithic concrete as well, but were eventually built of fibre reinforced concrete elements. There was an international competition held for the architectural solution and the result speaks for itself.”

Special prize for architecture and the builder – Parking building in Ülemiste City, Valukoja 4C, in Tallinn.

Design: Novarc Group AS, Ilmar Klammer;

Builder: Nordecon Betoon OÜ.

For the skilful renovation of a historic building; for the pleasant and successful combining of “the new and old” structurally, aesthetically and functionally.

For preparedness for cooperation, thinking along, for the well-considered and high-quality concrete work.

The jury’s comments: “A concrete parking building has been cast into a brick factory building from the 1950s, the brick surfaces have been covered with concrete on the inside. The architect’s work must be acknowledged for the fact that a new building – a parking building in conformity with standards – was built inside the old contours. The architect has done his best and the builders of Nordecon provided very high-quality work.”

Special prize for the ordering party: Lauri Tuulberg – apartment at Kosemetsa 11 in Tallinn.

For bold and innovative use of concrete in the interior design of an apartment block apartment.

Aadu Kana, Chairman of the jury: “While concrete does not really feature in the general appearance of the three apartment buildings in Kosemetsa Road, then this apartment is an extremely concrete-friendly piece of art. The owner of the apartment can be awarded the title of a “real friend of concrete”: the walls of the apartment are of cast concrete and the islands in the kitchen and in the sauna, lights in various rooms, etc. are also made of concrete.”

Special prize of the magazine “Ehitaja” – TMB Element OÜ: The high-quality concrete elements of the building of the Physicum of the University of Tartu.

The competition “Concrete Construction of the Year” organized for the fifteenth time this year was brought to life to introduce to the public the wide areas of application of concrete and to acknowledge the people who have used a domestic building material – the versatile and easy-to-shape concrete – to implement their ideas.

13 works were submitted to this year’s competition. The competition was open to the concrete buildings and the structures and procedures used in them that were delivered to the ordering parties in the course of 2014.
